In his statement after this morning’s meeting with President Christofias, Special Adviser of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus, Alexander Downer said that the two communities of Cyprus have agreed to conduct a population census. For the Republic of Cyprus, there is already a census scheduled to start on 1st October 2011 by the statistical services while for the Turkish Cypriot community, it will take place later near the end of the year. In both cases the process will be done with the help of the UN’s Population Agency. He stressed that the UN cannot take up the task on their own but will help as much as possible.
