The Supreme Court has decided today to approve the Legal Service’s request for waiver of immunity of the EDEK MP, Phidias Sarika in connection to case of Sewerage Board of Paphos (SBP). The decision for lifting of parliamentary immunity is not limited only for purposes of interrogation of Mr Sarika from police investigators, as requested by his defense attorneys, but also for purposes of arrest (if necessary), litigation (in the case that led to justice) and even imprisonment (if found guilty by the Court). The decision of the waiver for the purposes of interrogation, arrest and litigation was unanimous with all 14 judges approving while for the purpose of imprisonment was approved with a vote of 7 for to 4 against.
Attorney General Costas Clerides stated that the decision should be regarded as a milestone in the Cyprus legal system.
