US Vice President Joe Biden will be visiting Cyprus between 21st and 23rd May. The schedule of his visit has not been finalized yet but he is expected to have individual meetings with President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu. The reason for his visit is the fact that Cyprus reunification talks have not progressed as much as the US had hoped after they restarted a few months ago. Unofficial sources suggest that the Famagusta area will be the main topic of discussion and that the US VP will announce American plans for financing the reconstruction plan of the enclosed city of Varosha and the surrounding area. Furthermore it is expected that experts will be allowed to enter the city for inspection and to facilitate their studies and de-mining of the area will begin. It is also rumoured that the deal for reopening the city has already been made but none of the involved parties have confirmed it.
If the rumours turn out to be real this will probably be the biggest step to overcome the 40 year division of the island until today.
