Nicosia Municipality has completed the preliminary plans for the conversion of Makariou avenue in Nicosia into a pedestrian road. The now depressing street that a few years back used to be the centre of shopping and city life has reached the end of its life in its current form according to the Nicosia Municipality. The plans, even though their implementation date has not been set (the required funds are not available yet) are expected to create the right conditions to revive the city in similar way Ledras street was brought back to life a few years ago.
The part of Makariou avenue starting at the St Spyridon Church junction (aka Debbenhams traffic lights) ending at Evagorou avenue will be converted into a pedestrian road. The road will be raised to the current pavement level and the whole area will be covered with uniform tiles. Sitting areas, street lighting, signs, bicycle stations and other amenities will be installed.
