According to today’s issue of Phileleftheros newspaper 500 police officers are being tested to determine their fitness after the alarming results of the preliminary tests which showed that our Police Force is suffering from obesity. Following a memo sent out by the Chief of Police, officers are visiting the Cyprus Sports Research Centre for a check up which includes blood tests, stress tests sports exercises and family medical history review. Aim of the study is to determine if the officers on an individual basis are required to take any action to improve their health condition. 350 officers have already completed the tests and another 150 are expected to participate.
The decision for the preliminary tests was taken after a tragic incident in which a member of the Drug Enforcement Unit passed away after a cardiac arrest and was reinforced by the results of the first 200 officers that were tested.
