Speaking at the 14th congress of the political party DISY, Nicos Anastasiadis announced today that he will be a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections. He said that he feels fit to lead the long march for a united Cyprus free from occupation forces which will guarantee the peaceful and constructive lives of its people. Mr Anastasiadis also added that the current, Demetris Christofias administration in its four years has proved that AKEL is unable to handle the problems and challenges of today and respond to contemporary visions of the society. The President of DISY also said that authority of the national council must be restored, and a subcommittee will be prepared with the help of experts which will lead into a solution framework.
General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou, responded immediately to the news, wondering if the premature announcement of candidacy of Mr Anastasiadis is a responsible attitude and if its helping the challenges that Cyprus has to currently face (before the elections). He also called the people of Cyprus to decide whether they can trust Mr Anastasiadis, and not to forget how DISY behaved during its10 years in office.
