According to the Cyprus Statistical Service, employees of the Cypriot public sector earn 30% more than their private sector counterparts. The average gross salary for both public and private sector was 1987 euro per month while the average for the public sector was 2600 euro. The report showed that 65% of public servants are being paid substantially more than the national average with the top 5300 highest earners earning more than 4500 euro per month. According to the same report discrepancy between the private and public sector salaries is misleading since the public sector salaries were included into the national average, meaning the private sector is actually earning even less than the figures show. The total Cypriot labour force is about 390000 while 70000 of them are working for the government and related public services.
