Primetel PLC announced today the operation of their next generation data communications cable connecting Cyprus to Marseille, France at a joint press conference with Reliance Globalcom at Primetel’s offices in Nicosia. The cable connects Cyprus to the HAWK submarine cable which is part of the largest private owned submarine cable system. The new cable integrates Cyprus to Reliance Globalcom’s international network and the European Internet backbone, allowing for substantially lower data communication latencies between Cyprus and London compared to the current systems. With a capacity of 2.7 Tbps it can also offer connectivity to other neighbouring countries such as Italy, Turkey, & Syria. With the operation of this system Cyprus opens prospects for attracting development of companies that handle large corporate data traffic which was not possible until now due to the high international connectivity costs.
