Cyprus along with Azerbaijan and Turkey is ranked last in Europe regarding Gay, Lesbian and Trans-gender matters. According to the spokesperson of the Accept Cyprus organisation, Cyprus is the only member of EU which ranks so low. According to survey by the same organisation in cooperation with Cyprus Planning Association 47% of their members are victims of psychological violence while 15% are even victims of physical violence. He also added that homophobia is a serious issue for our society since homosexual children grow up in an environment of isolation, fear and marginalization.
From the survey results it was found that 51% of Cypriots feel uncomfortable around a gay person, 75% would have a problem if they had a homosexual friend and only 3% of parents said that they wouldn’t change their attitude towards their child if they found out it was homosexual.
