According to information uncovered by the newspaper Phileleftheros a scenario is being rumoured in Brussels in which Turkey is preparing to withdraw its bid for joining the EU. Turkey is currently at a dead-end in its accession path because of failure to fully align with the EU policies. A withdrawal scenario can be used as blackmail towards the Cypriot side in order to unfreeze at least two of the negotiating chapters it has been blocking. In the meantime, supporting evidence to this idea, is the fact that Turkey has instructed the Turkish Cypriot administration to put a brake on the negotiations for the Cyprus Problem till further notice. The Turkish government denies any of this information.
