Adult drug users who are sentenced for up to 2.5 years imprisonment will not be spending their time in jail but will be incorporated into centres for treatment of physical and psychological addiction. According to Alithia newspaper currently 30% of the prisoners in Central Jail of Nicosia are there for drug related reasons while according to a report by the Ministry of Health, the correctional facilities are not appropriate for assisting drug addicts with their problems. A committee will be formed which will examine each case and allocate the convicts to the appropriate programme.
